Often, when using WordPress, various types of errors may appear. One of them is the message "the website is temporarily unavailable" during scheduled maintenance. This is embarrassing, especially when the website is unreachable to visitors. Fortunately, there are simple methods to solve this problem, which I will describe below.
1. Delete the .maintenance file
When updating, WordPress creates a temporary file called .maintenance. If the update process is not completed properly, this file may remain on the server, causing an error to be displayed.
To delete the .maintenance file, log in to your FTP account (using FileZilla, for example) and navigate to your WordPress root directory. Delete the .maintenance file and try refreshing your page again.
2. Manually update WordPress
If deleting the .maintenance file doesn't work, you can try updating WordPress manually.
Download the latest version of WordPress from the official website, unzip the files and use an FTP client to upload them to the main WordPress directory on the server. Remember to keep the original wp-config.php and .htaccess files as they contain important configuration information.
3. WP Maintenance Mode Plugin
If you want more control over the maintenance process, consider installing the WP Maintenance Mode plugin. It allows you to easily put the website into maintenance mode while offering many configuration options.
After installing the plugin, you go to the settings and can set individual messages for users, decide who has access to the website in maintenance mode and plan when the website should return to normal operations.
4. WP Staging plugin
Another solution is to create a working copy of the website where all updates and tests will be performed. A plugin will come in handy for this purpose WP Staging.
Using it, you create the so-called staging site – this is an exact copy of your website where you can safely update it and check if everything is working properly before changes are implemented on the main page.
If you experience update issues on your work site, there is no risk that your main site will be damaged or disabled as a result.
In summary, the “site is temporarily unavailable” scheduled maintenance error in WordPress, while annoying, is relatively easy to fix. The key is to approach the problem carefully and use one of the methods presented above. Thanks to this, you will avoid unnecessary stress and quickly restore your website to normal operation.
